What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a system of medicine that explores issues from a whole person perspective.  We cover a broad spectrum of safe, natural treatment modalities with the focus on supporting the body’s natural healing processes.  The goal of naturopathic treatment is to address the root cause of disturbance and correct the imbalances that cause symptoms.  Symptoms are signs that balance has been disrupted in the body and need to be interpreted in the context of everything that is going on with a particular person, not in isolation.  For this reason, we take an extensive initial history covering all current and past symptoms and reviewing all body systems including a screening physical exam in order to have all of the pieces of the puzzle that is your health problem.  Relieving symptoms helps to maintain function while we work on restoring health and correcting imbalances.

Naturopathic training is a rigorous and intensive program paralleling medical school in biomedical subjects and excelling in natural support of fundamental healing processes.  We are required to complete an undergraduate university degree and then another 4 years of full time study at an accredited naturopathic college.  Although Naturopathic medicine is not dependent on pharmaceuticals to direct patient care, Naturopathic Doctors often work in conjunction with MD’s and are trained in conventional medications for optimal patient care. Insurance companies recognize the benefits of naturopathic treatment; almost all extended health plans cover Naturopathic Medicine and Acupuncture.
