Does “Natural” = “Healthy”?

Green leaves from herbs

Not Always

We all want to do our bit for the environment and to keep ourselves and our families healthy. It gets a bit confusing when so called “natural” cleaning products aren’t actually so healthy.

Plant-based ingredients included in some green cleaners include limonene (a citrus-based oil), pine oil, and the foaming agent coconut diethanolamide — all of which can cause an allergic skin rash. A study of natural and non-toxic consumer products found the suspected cancer-causing chemical 1,4-dioxane in roughly half of 100 tested products — including several dish-washing liquids with words such as “Earth friendly” and “eco” in their brand names.

The best green cleaner is water with elbow grease and/or vinegar.
